Dungarvan town’s original Irish name of 'Dun Garbhan' takes its name from Saint Garbhann who founded a church here in the seventh century.

Dungarvan has many fine historical attractions that educate and amaze any visitor. The Waterford County Museum tells the history of Dungarvan and County Waterford. It aims to increase the interest in history through the exhibition of cultural artifacts and the publication of pamphlets and books on items of historical interest to the locality. Located just off Grafton Street is the Old Market Arts Centre has a rich and varied history. It holds art exhibitions throughout the year. 

King John's Castle is a 12th century Anglo-Norman castle. It fell into disrepair, but today it has been restored and is managed by Dúchas, the Heritage Service, who provides guided tours, an audio-visual show and exhibitions during the summer months. St. Mary's Church was built in 1828 by George Richard Pain. The stark gable wall standing to the back of the church is thought to have formed part of the pre-Reformation church of St. Mary the Virgin.

For those wishing to experience culture on their day trip, then a visit to Dungarvan Museum is a must. The Dungarvan Museum presents the history of Dungarvan and West Waterford through a series of displays and panels. The Abbeyside Reference Archives is designed to give you a picture of old Abbeyside through photography and historical material.

During your day trip to Dungarvan why not stop to sample the local arts and crafts. Visit Comeragh Crystal, where the tradition of the craft of crystal and glass cutting is carried out by skilled craftsmen. Slateways is an individually run craft studio which specialises in transforming original pieces of locally sourced slate and mirror glass into unique pieces of art.

To finish off your day trip to Dungarvan you could sample the many walks in and around Dungarvan. Colligan woods, Cruachan, Brickey River and Kilnafarna hill walk are just a sample. For those looking for longer explorations should take the Comeragh Mountain walk which takes you through the Nire Valley.
