Smarter Travel Getting Dungarvan Moving Better

Whether it’s to school, work, shopping, to events or just visiting friends and relatives,
we need to consider ways other than using the car. Smarter Travel is about getting out of the car and walking, cycling or taking the bus. 

If you have to drive, have you considered car pooling. Smarter Travel will succeed if everyone works together to develop infrastructure such as developing walking routes, cycle paths, and implementing an educational programme to change our behaviour to a more healthy lifestyle, away from cars and our dependence on driving. Together we can make a difference.

The Department of Transport is running a Smarter Travel Area competition for Local Authorities throughout Ireland.  Through the national smarter travel initiative, €50million will be put in place over 5 years to help make the change from cars to healthier and more sustainable ways of commuting.  This is a national competition, and it is envisaged that only 4 towns will be selected from all over Ireland.  The competition is steep.

Waterford County Council is preparing a bid for Dungarvan to pilot Smarter Travel in Ireland.  We want to make sure that our bid is informed by people who it will affect the most.  We want your views.  Please send in your ideas on how to improve cycling and walking in Dungarvan to:

Healthy living is important to us all.  Dungarvan can potentially become the blue print for reshaping travel patterns, moving from cars to cycling, walking, public transport or car pooling.  We will work together we can change to healthier travel – smarter travel.
